2010 Brownwood Bike Rally; This will get hairy

As if we don’t have enough to brag about this past weekend as it is! If there’s some racing going on, you can rest assured that we will be a part of it. If there’s some community involvement opportunity that suits our message, you can rest assured that we will be a part of that as well. When the two of them intersect…it’s like Chotas going to a group ride; just plain natural.

The Brownwood Bike Rally & Run is an event that many incarnations of our team have been very heavily involved in for many years now. Originally, Marlay House owner and racer, Darren Comer, and his wife Amanda have been running and organizing this event. Heck, they’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember, along side the East Atlanta Kid’s Club. Therefore, we always try to have a few guys in attendance.

Typically, we have more, but we’ll suffice with 2 that count for 4 here, in Colby Millen and Doug “The Lug” Ollerenshaw both honorably stepped up to the plate and opted to race the benefit event on our behalf. Thanks guys!

As usual, because this is such a great organization, the turnout was better than any of us could have hoped. In Colby’s very own words

It’s truly amazing that these guys, with such constant and daunting budget concerns, never ending fights to raise money, battling against lives that few of us can ever begin to fathom, all in their volunteer time,  can find a moment to dig just a little bit deeper and put together a race and festival for the public to enjoy…and to celebrate their organization.

Any of you readers that took a “rest day” this weekend because you’re “tired”, please flog yourselves now.

The weather was perfect, the crowd was festive and the D.J. supplied a full bottle of funky cold medina flowing down the courses all day long. As far as the racing goes, per usual, we had a group of high caliber racers on the starting line from the likes of Track World Champion and resident Aussie Jeff Hopkins, Atlanta fixture/mountain bike deity/artist Colby Millen to Doug Ollerenshaw (who’s leg hair is SO strong that it keeps breaking his Mach 3).

Upon firing the start gun, the pace was instantly insanely fast! Within 5 laps, Colby and Doug, teammates, had found themselves off the front, setting a gap from the rest of the field (Jeff) within minutes. Wanting more than anything to slip away from Jeff, these two kept padding their lead until any modicum of question had been removed.

As teammates, they worked together to maintain the gap until the last lap, but let’s be honest; when there’s a finish line in sight, one may as well throw blood in the water. Doug, desperate for a result this year, launched a nervous early attack that Colby was able to close like a jar of salsa, but he wasn’t ready for the second jump that Doug rolled off his throttle.  The Lug rode away blindfolded,  like he’s done many times in his career. 1st place going to Doug the Lug, 2nd place going to Colby.

As of Sunday morning, Colby is no longer shaving!

Thanks for supporting the East Atlanta Kid’s Club, Doug and Colby. We do, as do they, very much appreciate it.

Onward!
